Amazon Kindle DX: Worth $489 Price Tag?

If you're a big fan of the Kindle and own either of the first and second generation models of it, you're probably wondering how the just-released Kindle DX differs from what you have now. Another question that's foremost in people's minds especially those looking to get a DX is whether the $489 price tag is worth it. Splurging almost $500 for a gadget is no simple matter so this Amazon Kindle DX review will look at what this latest version has to offer.

When it comes to the size and capability, the Kindle 2 is the smaller and more compact version. It measures 8" x 5.3" x 0.36", comes with 6-inch diagonal screen, and weighs 10.2 ounces. As far as portability is concerned, the Kindle 2 would be the perfect partner that you can bring with you anywhere you go. And you won't ever lack for good reading content as its 2G hard drive can store as many as 1,500 books. With its lowered down price of $299, the Kindle 2 is way more affordable than the latest Kindle.

Now enter the new Kindle DX. So what does it bring to the table besides its steep price? For one, it takes reading to a whole new level by its bigger size at 10.4" x 7.2" x 0.38" and an impressive 9.7-inch screen that auto-rotates. Go from portrait to landscape mode by just turning the device in your hand. This makes it a great device for reading newspapers and books that come with illustrations, and looking over charts and maps. With that size though, it also tips the scale at 18.9 ounces, nearly twice that of the Kindle 2.

The Kindle DX has twice the capacity to hold books, boasting of a 4GB hard drive. It can also natively read PDF files which is a huge convenience as the previous models required file conversion. All these features are available at the price of $489.

Don't think that just because the Kindle DX is newer and sports bigger numbers that it is the only one you should consider. The Kindle 2 has size to its advantage. While the DX might be great for reading at home, the Kindle 2 is far more portable. It will also save you a big chunk of change. If you are willing to pay for the extra size and features, the DX is a great piece of technology. But the Kindle 2 still has more than enough to offer most people. If you are just looking for a way to replace ratty old books or cut down on how many textbooks you're hauling around, the Kindle 2 has a lot to offer. Whichever one you decide is right for you, you're getting a device that will keep you reading whatever you want whenever you want.
